What kind of professional photography can I do on a very low budget and with a single D-SLR body and lens?

I'm in the market to purchase an entry-level DSLR lens (for budget reasons) and wanted to consult the community for some answers. I'm planning on buying a Nikon D40 with kit lens. Since I'm fairly green to the whole professional photography scene (web developer previously), I wanted to consult experienced photogs who were once in my position.

  1. I strongly suggest you don't go pro with a D40, it can have trouble focusing, handling low light situations, and is more of a consumer camera than a pro. Get, at the very least, a used Nikon D80 or D200. And get at least a decent lens, such as a 50mm 1.8D (though it won't autofocus on a D40).
  2. You will find that the D40 is not very robust. In a Pro environment it will fail fairly quickly...or at least give you issues. Check the Nikon D200 or D80 instead.
  3. Check craigslist for DSLR shopping on a tight budget.
  4. Nikon D40 is the good and cheapest Digital SLR in market. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KJQ1DG?ie=UTF8&tag=computer0bd-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000KJQ1DG
  5. None. There is more to professional photography than just framing and snapping a pretty picture. Take some courses in photography and at least read some basic texts. It seems that like most people you probably don't know enough to phrase a sensible question. Excellent photographs can be taken with almost any camera if used by an expert. An easy to read introductory book is "Optics in Photography" by Rudolph Kingslake ISBN 0-8194-0763-1 www.richardfisher.com
  6. Don't get me wrong the nikon D40 is an excellent camera but i would prefer something with more megapixels. For an extra 50 bucks you can get a Canon XS which will have 10 megapixels opposed to 6. Any photographer will say its the camera and the lens that produces quality and not the megapixels which is true but the megapixels allow you to print your photos at larger sizes. More megapixels also makes the crop job easier.
